Summer Reading

Let the adventure begin!

Here's an excerpt from the Reading Rockets website:

Is your child fascinated by dinosaurs, planes, bugs, birds, animals, the moon and stars, art, thunder and lightning? Do you have a young detective, explorer, or superhero at home? Does your child love reading poetry, myths, or tall tales with you? Start with a book … and see where your child's imagination goes!

Click here for their list of themes.

And I'd like to share a couple of my favorite books for summer:

Miss Smith's class can't wait for story time. When their teacher reads from her incredible storybook, the worlds she describes come alive-literally! So when the class takes a field trip to the local aquarium, reading magic brings favorite nautical characters to life, including Long John Silver and the Swiss Family Robinson. From swimming with the Little Mermaid to rescuing their treasured storybook from scurvy pirates, it's another rollicking reading adventure Miss Smith's class - and readers - won't soon forget.

This is one of our favorite series!

Here's an art project that my grandbaby and I did for the Treasure Island spread:

(It's made out of construction paper and cardboard.)

I learned about this next book during a Creative Literacy Webinar hosted by Page Turner Adventures:

Written by Ken Geist, Illustrations by Julia Gorton

"Little fish, little fish, let me come in."

"Not by the skin of my finny fin fin!"

"Then I'll munch, and I'll crunch, and I'll smash your house in!"

Mama tells her three little fish that it's time to make their own homes. Jim builds his house of seaweed, but the big bad shark munches it up. Tim builds his house of sand, but the shark crunches it up. It's smart Kim who sets up house in an old sunken ship!

Page Turner Adventures has a wonderful craft project for this book. It's a Three Little Fish and the Big Bad Shark Tissue Box Theater (with Fish Sticks!). LOL! You can download it and lots of other fun activities on their website. Click here for details.

And in the event you haven't heard about Riley and Kenny...

Riley Roam and Kenny Mikey are the Storyologists at Page Turner Adventures. Storyologists travel the world, collecting, telling and writing stories. But they also create and collect crafts, activities, videos, shows, books, and pretty much anything having to do with Imagination, creativity, and fun ways to learn.

Page Turner Adventures host live workshops too:

Since 2006 Riley Roam and Kenny Mikey have presented summer reading program workshops to thousands of librarians in multiple states. They bring their passion for books, stories, crafts and LIBRARIES to life in fun, interactive workshops that are filled with information designed to inspire, excite, empower and support librarians.

Their enthusiasm is contagious. WOOT!

I'll be sharing more fun picture books after the SCBWI FL Mid-Year Workshop and Intensives. It's this Friday!
